Downtown safety project earns provincial planning award

A Calgary downtown safety project has been recognized province-wide for putting design recommendations into action.

The City of Calgary and DIALOG examined 10 downtown locations through Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, working with businesses, community organizations, City operations teams and technical experts. The work focused on practical changes to make public spaces safer and more welcoming.

Several improvements are already underway or complete, including lighting enhancements, safety infrastructure and other measures in public areas used by residents, visitors and businesses.

For contractors working in public-facing spaces, the project is a reminder that lighting, site safety and the way people move through an area are part of the built work — not an afterthought. The initiative received an Alberta Professional Planners Institute award for its implementation-focused approach.

Calgary Parks sets October 13 cutoff for FAC applications

Calgary Parks will stop accepting Final Acceptance Certificate applications on October 13, 2026.

The change is in a new BILD Calgary Region bulletin. Parks’ Development Guidelines and Standard Specifications identify September 30 as the FAC application cutoff date, but the City has confirmed that applications will no longer be accepted after October 13.

That date matters for teams closing out subdivision and site work that still needs Parks’ final acceptance process.
