Downtown West is set to get 315 new rental homes through Onyx, a mixed-use purpose-built rental development by Cantiro. The project marks the first development under Calgary’s demolition incentive plan.

The development combines purpose-built rental housing with mixed-use space, putting a sizable residential project into Calgary’s Downtown West pipeline. Cantiro is the developer behind the project, which is being advanced through the city’s new incentive approach rather than as a standalone conventional rental build.

For GCs and trades, the headline number is 315 homes in one project, alongside the mixed-use component. Onyx is the first project identified under the demolition incentive plan, making it an early test of how the program moves older properties toward new rental construction.

Cold Lake First Nations challenges Pacific Link pipeline designation

Cold Lake First Nations has applied for judicial review of Ottawa’s decision to designate the Pacific Link pipeline as a project in the national interest.

The proposed pipeline would run from Alberta to British Columbia. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced last week that the project would be fast-tracked.

The court challenge adds a legal step to a project already tied to major Alberta infrastructure and federal review decisions.
